VaraC Crash: Connection to node running RMS Express

The Maryland DC section runs a monthly exercise. We have been using VaraC to build operator skills for use and promoting the program for Emergency Communication. The monthly exercise involves target stations that run Vara modem with both VaraC and WINLINK (RMS Express) on both HF and 2M.

On 2M target stations run Vara FM P2P with WINLINK for several nights and then switch to Vara FM using VaraC. I tried connecting to a station this evening that turned out to be running WINLINK with Vara 2M. VaraC did not handle the input from the target station and crashed the Vara 2M modem client.

Submitting a bug report to request additional software for input parsing to gracefully handle input and not crash the Vara 2M modem.

VarAC is not crashing. It restarts the VARA modem as a precaution mechanism. when an unexpected event happens (Like an illegal packet) it can also hang the VARA modem. This can happen when there are 2 QSOs on the safe freq.

So to be on the safe side, VarAC is showing you an informative mesasge on screen:

UNABLE TO DECODE DATA FROM N3WOF. ABORTING. See VarAC.log for more info. In most cases a VARA packet from another QSO on the same frequency slipped into this QSO and corrupted the link.

And also restarts the VarAC modem.

I can add to this error message a also some words about "VARA modem will not be restarted." if you find it more clear for the user.
