Broadcast not sending when "I'm away"

I don't know if this is new. If I send a broadcast when marked away, the text will move to the message box without being sent.

Not complaining. Now that I know I won't be rebooting PC/radio.

Loving VarAC. Thanks!

The text moves to the box without the radio keying up (light stays green). If busy, it waits to move the text but still never keys the radio. Sends normally when I'm away box is unchecked.

QSY Glitch

I connected with a station on the calling slot. I picked the QSY slot. The communications started for me to send the QSY, but I suspect the recipient either lost contact or just went off the air. After a few times of trying to get the QSY through, once my station didn't get any response, things just stopped. No more attempts to send the QSY. Nothing, it just sat waiting for something that was obviously not happening. I had to use the Abort button to terminate the link.

Shouldn't the QSY be more aggressive? If responses don't arrive within a reasonable amount of time I would expect the app to either retry or decide the partner had dropped for some reason and terminate the link. It shouldn't just sit and require operator intervention to terminate the link.

There could be some idle limiter that would ultimately have triggered and terminated…

I would need to see a datastream traffic of this QSO to determin what went wrong. Usually the VARA modem waits and doing nothing if the other side is trying to send data. In nothing is heard for 60 seconds the link is terminated, I cant tell by your description if the QSY command did went through or not and where exactly things went wrong. To analyze this please :

  1. Send me the section of the datastream. you can use the datastream log file or the CALLSIGN HISTORY module and get the QSO data.

  2. Send the VarAC.log entries from that timefreame.

Just in general - there are no "retries of QSY". the VARA modem is an ARQ based - meaning delivery is gurenteed. If the QSY command did not went through - the VARA modem continue and try to deliver the message. if it was delivered and the other side did not respond - there is no need to resend the QSY invitation - it is 100% there. now it might be that propogation went bad and you didnt hear anythingf from the other side and VARA gave up after 60 seconds.

We will know more after we see the log.

Beacon feature

What if beacons show wether a station is away or not? So you don’t connect to an AFK station

I have been trying to do POTA activations on VarAC and a beacon that indicated a live vs unattended station would be very useful for POTA.

According to POTA rules, the stations must be attended in order to count as a valid POTA contact.

(I know that some ignore this rule with FT8, but I'm not one of those guys)

Thanks for continuing to develop new features Irad!

HRD not logging DYNAMIC

The QSO was forwarded automatically to my Ham Radio Deluxe log, but when I attempted to upload them to LOTW, it indicated that DYNAMIC was not recognizable. Any suggested fix?

In my experience, the issue there might not be HRD. LoTW TQSL software needs a simple adjustment to make this work. So, if you use TQSL to upload VarAC logs, try this: File -> Display of Modify Preferences -> Click on ADIF Modes tab -> Click on Add -> Type DYNAMIC and select DATA below. -> Click OK. At this point, TQSL will automatically convert DYNAMIC into DATA and successfully upload your VarAC adif log into LoTW.

PS.: I don´t know if you can do this with HRD. I dropped that years ago.

Good luck and 73.

Issue with VarAC Wednesday Vmail

I participated in VarAC Wednesday for the first time this past Wednesday, February 18th. I followed the instructions that are on the VarAC website about sending Vmail for VarAC Wednesday. But it wouldn't work. I was eventually able to send the Vmail, but I think there's either a bug, or maybe the instructions have to be updated?

I filled out the Vmail as instructed and checked to make sure it was in my Outbox. Once I confirmed that, I tried to connect with a station that was an Email Gateway (station with a black lightening bolt). I waited about a minute, but the station didn't accept. So, I disconnected.

I then noticed a station that popped up in the Broadcast box stating that his station email gateway was ready for VarAC Wednesday. I manually typed his call sign into the box above the "Connect" button and then clicked it. Once…

I have received a couple of reports from operators stating that their Outgoing VMAILs were not being automatically relayed. In cases where operators are away there is a pop-up that asks if want to leave a VMAIL. I click NO. I do not click do not show again. Are you seeing that pop-up on your station?

After the QSY and signal report are complete the station should tell you it provides relay service. There is another pop-up and you have around 9 second to make your selection. The following video shows the entire process. I will update our website under About to add a link to this video:

I was told my beacon announced digital voice over air and it is a sound card issue. Can anyone help with this or lead me to the right post.

Thanks for the help. Turns out it was something called the narrator in the sound settings of VARAC. It was sending a voice announcement over the air with each beacon for visually impaired folks.

Scanning of freqs?

There was a question some years ago about scanning ->

"Freq Scanning-Could there be a way to scan bands, not the scheduler but 10 or 15 second intervals between any two bands?"

The question did not get any answers and I would like to ask the same.

The settings could be for example:

scanning off/on, 1850 5, 3600 5, 5360 5, 7070 5 or

scanning off/on, 5354 5, 5357 5, 5360 5

I believe it time to do this. I will add this to the next version. I will also add the option to beacon once every 15 minutes on each of those bands while scanning so people will know you are there and can try to connect you. Downside is that most likely you wont be able to receive beacons from others. THerefore this is suitable only if you care about operating a service (Like email gateway/BBS/AI) for the sake of helping the community, but you wont be part of the party of getting beacons and SNR reports, getting broadcasts or even receiving CQ calls.
