Multiple group BBS support

Loving the BBS.  I know this is only the first release and this is so obvious maybe it's already in the works, but I'll request it anyway:

I'd like to be able to configure multiple BBS directories and switch between them, e.g. BBS_GeneralPublic, BBS_Group1, BBS_Group2, each with its own whitelist.  It'd be really slick if I could also associate a frequency with each one, so that when I flip to Group1's frequency, it automatically points to BBS_Group1.  Maybe BBS_GeneralPublic is the default when I'm on a standard CF or slot.

Pretty please?

Hi, Is there a max file size for BBS transfer, I have a host of manuals that might be interesting to other hams. Also a directory system would be nice so we can group files EG all Kenwood rot Yaesu files etc.

BBS ?

How does the new bbs work in 13.2.7? Very little info is given in the (?) radio buttons. Does it print a command banner like bpq32? What command triggers a download or upload? I don't see a ver 13.2.7 guide and the ver 13 guide is not updated with the new bbs feature.

I just want to now how to use it before I start stumbling around. I will start trying to test it tonight on two rigs and see where I get.

Writing the VarAC program and then writing and processing the manuals are not synchronized.

Editing the manual also takes up a lot of free time.

I'll start with the English version first, then the German and Dutch versions.

Only then will I send it to Irad after review.

Due to an incorrect configuration in my security system, the sending was delayed, but this has now been resolved.

V13.2.7 and rigctld

VarAC still changes my rig's RX bandwidth whenever changing band or frequency. This happens because mode and bandwidth are linked together in rigctld. My preferred solution to this problem is still the one implemented in WSJT-X: Define "mode=none" and WSJT-X will never define the rig's mode. If VarAC really sees a need to define the mode, it should first query the current bandwidth and restore it after having set the mode.

USB on VARA FM

When starting VarAC for VHF my Cat control sets my radio to 144.950 USB and I have to switch it manually to FM. I changed the setting on the Rig tab under the antenna tuner to FM and it sets the FM mode on startup.

If I switch to a SSB frequency with this setting I now have to set the USB mode manually (which I prefer since not much USB is on VHF)

VarAC and Emcomm/Disaster comm applications

At the suggestion of N3CZ Gary as this forum v. the VarAC HF Forum be better suited for my subject, I've moved my post here. I ask readers indulgence if some of my content might/has been fragmentally covered elsewhere previously in this sub-forum.

For those for whom this piques interest, I recommend first starting with the few comments to my post in the VarAC HF forum.

What follows is my post to the FaceBook VARA HF group re VarAC, EmComm, and Vmail/Email

Branching here from my earlier query about auto-disconnect function for sending Vmail/Email. My intent is to begin a discussion on:

  1. How many users view VarAC as a tool in the emcomm tool box and in what context: short, medium, and/or long haul connections.

  2. How useful can the "Send File" feature be for Emcomm.

Frequently heard stations

It would be useful to have a report of the stations that my station has heard the most often, by band. Added enhancements would be to set a time period (e.g. last 30 days, or between date A and date B), or time of day (e.g. between 0700 and 1100). This would improve the likelihood of success when parking a message for one station on another station.

Auto-QSY Allowed Frequency Ranges

Hi Irad and all VarACiers,

I suggest that when someone has edited and changed the "Auto-QSY Allowed Frequency Ranges" file in the program, VarAC should not offer to the connecting station in the POPUP any QSY Slots that are outside the allowed Frequency Ranges. This will be very helpful and will minimize the grief that might be caused to the connecting operator if the he/she receives a REJECT in QSY, since the connecting operator has no way to know which Slots are not allowed to each specific VarAC station, and it will help a station to sucessfully QSY to an allowed Slot within the 3 minutes that he/has has available before he/she receives a disconnect at the calling frequency!

This will require VarAC to send the lists of avaialble QSY slots which will generate too much traffic. In my opinion its a solution that 1% will benefit from but will slow down the experiance for 100% of the users.

Automatic recovery to “CONNECT MODEM” when VARA Modem terminates

Hi,

My VARA Modem occasionally crashes for unknown reasons; this may be related to my Linux/Wine environment or accidental process termination.

When this happens, VarAC remains in the “DISCONNECT MODEM” state even though the modem process is no longer running.

To recover, I must first press “DISCONNECT MODEM” to reset VarAC’s internal state, and then press “CONNECT MODEM” again after restarting VARA Modem.

It would be very helpful if VarAC could automatically detect that VARA Modem has terminated (unexpectedly or otherwise), and automatically switch the button state from “DISCONNECT MODEM” back to “CONNECT MODEM.”

Broadcast w/Alert Tag

I’m on Windows 10 using v13.1 VarAC. Strange little bug we discovered. If you broadcastcast and use an alert tag, if you have and email address setup in the alert tag, it will actually transmit (folks report hearing the transmission) but no one will see the broadcast. This has been tested thoroughly. If you remove the email address from the alert tag and repeat the broadcast, everyone will see it.

Feel free to contact me if needed.

Ok, I had another operator (N4WXI) go to a clear frequency (40m) with me and we tested all of our alert tags (13). We put an email in in every alert tags and only the broadcast on each line was checked. When transmitted, none were shown on the other side. Took out the emails, transmitted them all again, and all of them showed up on the other side. Neither side has the sound being transmitted, sound settings are verified and correct. Both of us were using the the announcements on broadcasts. We tried muting all sounds, did not change anything, still no reception. Now for the good news I hope. During the testing, I was noticing the waterfall on the transmission side. When there are emails in the tags, it sends the email out first, because my phone would alert before the transmission. I also noticed that the transmission was 15-20% shorter in length. I believe what is happening is there is a timing issue because the email is being sent out, and taking time away from the actual transmitted data. I have not tested the new version to see if the situation persist.
