Sending email to a VarAC user

What format does an email sent from the Internet have to use, or what is the minimum meta data it needs to contain, to be able to send an email to a VarAC user via a specific VarAC email gateway? Alternatively, is it possible to send an email from the Internet to a VarAC user without knowing which VarAC email gateway to use? In the above, I am assuming I know one or more email gateway to which the user will have access. The above process may be needed when you have never received an email via VarAC from that user.

No specific format or metadata. When you select the vmail button and then click the email option in the dialog box, you are presented with standard email parameters. The recipient need not even be a ham. It can go to anyone with email. But you will need to connect to an email gateway ham who will in turn send the email in the regular/internet way. Why not send it yourself that way? Perhaps its because you are in an area that has experienced storm damage and the internet is not available. So send it to another ham who has internet and their station will automatically send it for you. Good luck. 73

The backgound information on the MDC Digital EmComm Challenge is posted, in response to Doug Bas question, in the VarAC FM discussion group. If interested in participation, read that Announcement and use the attached Target Station List to hone your EmComm skills.

Winter Field Day (WFD)

I will use Winlink, JS8CALL, PSK as I did last year. This year I would like to add VARAC. It is an EmCOMM exercise and I think that makes sense.

Anyone else doing WFD? Watch for W8TNO (our club call) Oakland County Amateur Radio Society (OCARS). 73 Doug N8VY

No ALC reading

After watching several set up video to confirm my settings I’m having trouble making contacts. Previously, I had no issues in making contacts but after a couple of months off, I’m only receiving but not able to connect. I noticed on my icon 7300 there is no ALC reading when transmitting. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Icom ic 705

I am trying to get VarAC with Varafm setup on my ic 705, but am having a problem I cant seem to get to the bottom of. I can connect varafm to the radio and test for signal, and I can test the PTT in the settings of varAC and they both work ok seperately. but when I try to cq or beacon nothing is being sent as varAC is not communicating with varafm. All ports seem correct. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the advice, manage to get it sorted. I missed a setting in varAC in data mode. It was set to usb data and should have been fm data.

VarAC and Field Day (or Winter Field Day)

My ham club is doing Winter Field Day later this month with a special event callsign (W0W). Since VarAC uses registered members' personal callsigns, I'm wondering what the proper procedure would be? Thoughts: 1. Modify the CQ in some way (not sure how) to indicate Winter Field Day (WFD) using the registered call sign then pass the exchange in the body of a message. 2. Just call CQ then announce it's a WFD contact in the body of a message.

  1. ? some other method.

Has VarAC been used in Field Day, if so, how was it handled?

Commands passed to rigctld

I would like to use rigctld in combination with VarAC. Unfortunately whenever the frequency is switched the bandwidth is also changed to the smallest filter available. Running rigctld in verbose mode shows that rigctld receives three commands - Frequency - Mode - Bandwidth The log shows that the filter bandwidth should be set to 0 which results in selecting the smallest filter (250 Hz) available. This effect does not show up if VarAC is configured using CAT rather than Hamlib. I wonder whether this is a problem with VarAC or with rigctld.

Hi. The hamlib command for changing mode is "M PKTUSB 0\n"

The value 0: This is a special flag in Hamlib that tells the radio to use its default passband for that specific mode.

Maybe this is what causes this ? what other option do you want to see ?

I can use -1 which tells the radio not to chang the bandwidth at all. do you want to try this out ?

VarAC EMAIL

I finally got the email up and running for smtp, but the Imap function failed.

Received the email sent to an external email account.

But how does one send email to the Winlink email capability?

As for IMAP - an error message is required in order for us to help. But most likely it is the issue that is covered on the troubleshooting section. follow the instructions.

As for winlink - Also covered on the troubleshooting section:
