VarAC on Linux/Pi/Mac

I've looked at the manual on how to set up the software on the Raspberry PI, but it's not clear to me that these instructions would work in Ubuntu, or even if the "portable" version of VarAC would run in Ubuntu.

All the info I've seen on VARA-HF under WINE is a year or more old, and the instructions on how to get it to work are (to me) quite complex, and indicate that there were still bugs trying to get VARA-HF running.

If you have been successful, I'd appreciate any help you can give (the more detailed, the better).
