Tag Icons in Beacon List on Linux

I'm running Linux Mint 22.3, and VarAC works fine, and has been for years, now running 13.2.7 with Wine 11.0. However, I find that the icons in the Tag column are not properly displayed. I have installed emoji fonts in Wine, and the emojis do properly display when sending/receiving emojis with another station in the message windows. Here is a screen capture showing the icon display failure:

This is the VarAC academy graduate "STAR" that for some reason is not visible on Linux. This is why on Linux I replaced all the emojis with letters but this was was left un-handled. I wll take care of it on the next version.

Thank you for the heads-up

do you run it in a wine instance?

have you installed fonts? how exactly do you try to start it?

Hi,

I'd like to share my experience installing VARA HF and VarAC on a fresh Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon system using Wine.

Because VARA/VarAC behave slightly differently depending on whether a 32-bit or 64-bit Wine prefix is used, I documented the procedures separately in two PDF guides - One for Wine32 and another for Wine64.

Hi Alister,

Great to see that you were successful with the installation—and even created a set of installation scripts which is fantastic!

I’d definitely love to use them for my future re-installations. It would be great if you could send them to ji1bqw.gene@gmail.com

Thanks! Gene

VarAC crashes immediately after establishing a connection

App opens, connects with FLRig, works with the soundcard

Everything seems fine until a connection is established. Then the VarAC window closes leaving VARA HF running with an active QSO. I just can't interact with it since the app closed.

I tried turning down the volume to many different levels. When I turn down the volume to the point where a connection is not made, it does not crash.

I tried upgrading to all the latest versions, it still blows chunks.

I tried looking for a log file to post, but I could not find it. I'm a newbie with Wine. I've used Linux for several years.

I'm running Ubuntu Mate. It's a fairly recent version.

Turning off the narration sounds fixed the issue, or maybe got around it. I made several QSOs with it. There's some other issue that gives an error message but that's for another report.
