how does VarAC interface with VARA to control PTT?
i'm the guy who's making the RWS server thing. someone tried running a server on their icom 7300, but that radio doesn't have data VOX so PTT wasn't able to work. is there a way to have VARA control PTT or do you have to do it yourself in realtime with the "PTT OFF" and "PTT ON" TNC commands

VARA send the PTT commands on the COMMAND port.
If you use it then it would be impossible for VarAC also to connect it and read the PTT commands.
The possible options for you to reflect this COMMAND data on a port of yours. So every data that goes on the COMMAND port, you will process and also reflect on other port like8500. And you set VarAC to connect this port which is yours.
You can also explore Port mirroring applications/libraries, so you can mirror all traffic on VARA ports to 2 applications
