Thanks Joe. Yep, I did run the 'fc-cache -fv' command and it all seemed to fall into place. A while back I did try to upgrade to the latest VarAC, but had some problem (I forget what it was) and didn't work. The full reinstall of the Linux distro "Andy's Ham Radio Linux" worked and probably gave me a nice clean platform to try again. If you have a spare computer, you should give Andy's a try, I've been pretty happy with it. I've also run Jason KM4ACK's Build a Pi routine on it and gets a lot more useful stuff running. 73! Thanks for the quick reply. I've been trying a few things, but no luck yet. Seems that the .ttf file should be put in ~/.fonts or in the Wine folder at ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts folder. I've found the font and put in both places, but still get the error message. I've tried WineTricks also, but not sure how that allows a different font to be installed. There seems to be a lot of options for fonts already listed, unless it's included in one of those? Not sure. Tom

I'm having similar issues, but mine won't even start correctly and get this message. I've found the Segoe UI font in a .ttf and put in the ~/.font folder and also tried in the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts folder also with no luck. The one I found is named - segoe-ui.ttf, but then not sure if that has the emogi images in there. Gene Ishikawa mentioned this as a reply to my question. "Hi, This is most likely caused by the Emoji fonts newly introduced in the latest version of VarAC. You can google and find how to install "Segoe UI Emoji" on wine. " I was doing ok with the previous VarAC, but just got squares instead of Emojis, but a screw up on my Linux machine couldn't fix, so I just did a new image of "Andy's Ham Radio Linux" and started a clean attempt. I've also tried installing fonts with WineTricks, but it doesn't seem to have an option for custome fonts, but I could be doing something wrong there too! What you guys are discussing sounds similar to my issue, so figured I'd drop in here and see if you figured anything out? Thanks, 73 KA7VIK

I did make a contact on it yesterday. Seems the other guy was just as new as I was. Andy's Ham Distro is pretty good. I did a search for distros and that came up a lot so giving it a try. Nicely organized and has most of the latest stuff installed already. Seems that there has been so much focus on Pi computers that it was harder to find one for a more 'normal' pc. HamPi has a version now for PCs also, but uses a more modern USB boot method that my old laptop wasn't happy with. I'll oven use HamPi and install Jason KM4ACK's "Build a Pi" also to set up Vara and Winlink easier. Fun stuff! A lot to play with. Tom

That did it. Installed smoothly now. Thanks! Now to finish up the rest of the install and get it one on the air and see what happens compared with the Raspberry Pi which works, but seems a bit too slow. 73, Tom
