I have an observation regarding file size. When I send an 18kB jpg file via Winlink it is being sent as 13648 bytes. Without any extra size reduction from my side. But when I send it via VarAC it is sent as 23217 bytes. That seem like unnecessary overhead to me, but I am not an expert in compression techniques. What do you think?

Totally agree. It should be the first thing to do in a QSO as you have no idea how long the QSO will be. If "our" QRG´s are all occupied you could even suggest another frequency .
