Interesting article in Sept 2023 QST titled "Understanding the Boltzmann Constant" which looked at a receivers noise floor based on filter width. The two filterwidths that were compared were 500Hz vs 2400Hz. Long story short the 500Hz BW had a 7dB better noise floor than 2400Hz. So this article confirmed my reasoning to use a 600Hz filter (a little wider than the 500Hz VARA signal but helps compensate for the many stations who are 50-100Hz off freq).

Thank you. I was wondering about this. When I use a 600Hz filter the waterfall is more dense and the audio sounds narrow. To the ear it is harder to hear signals yet from the article you reference it suggests the VARA modem actually benefits from less/lower noise.
Well - thats a myth that is now officially proven :) Thanks Gary. Setting my rig now :)
