I like to recommend to keep it as it is. Some tuners are NOT bypassed during receive, which gives some advantage as working like a preselector. If you would start VarAC without activating the tuner, it could keep the tuner with the last settings, different to the actual band and so the receiver keeps deaf until a bandchange activates the tuner. Even worse if the transmitter will be activated e.g. by the beacon into a untuned tuner.
I understand your ask. yet - I do not find the auto tune upon startup much different then any other frequency change that triggers a tune.
When you change from 20 to 40 meter and you enabled auto-tune, you will be tuning on a frequency that may be active. So the concern of tuning on a yet-to-be-listen frequency is the same if you just booted VarAC or QSYed to any other frequency while auto-tune is on.
So bottom line - if that is your concern - then disablying the auto-antenna tuner will give you the comfort you are looking for while manually activating your RIG tuner when needed
You need to distinguish between the TUNE button where the VARA modem is just sending a "beep" ,and activating the antenna tuner which is calling your rig to perform an antenna tuner.
Antenna tuner is engages every time you change frequency. you have a parameter to disable it if you want. When starting VarAC is performs this. also when changing frequency.
