SOLVED: VarAC hangs after Windows 11 update KB5058499 Update: Workaround works!

TLDR: to work around the issue, in your VarAC.ini file, set:

LinuxCompatibleMode=ON

Root cause: Emojis on the main screen triggers the issue. Those emojis are replaced with plain ASCII Characters under Linux compatibility mode.

Some users have reported that VarAC hangs after a recent Windows 11 update. I’ve also heard from another developer whose application is experiencing similar issues. It appears this may be caused by a faulty Microsoft update.

PLEASE NOTE:

This particular update from Microsoft is currently in PREVIEW mode, meaning it’s an early release intended for feedback and not a mandatory update. You can uninstall it if needed. However, before doing so, please read on—we have found a workaround.

I’ve already reported the issue to Microsoft and am actively investigating potential solutions. Since all my Windows 11 PCs at home are working fine, I rely on the goodwill and cooperation of our amazing community.

Hello Irad.

The "Unattended Links" button is off. See the PDF "PE1LUP Main Screen 2025-06-08" as an attachment.

I have also added the file "INI File" as an attachment.

There you can also see that "Unattended Links" is set to "Off".

Sure it's off. As stated on the log you sent. You need to turn it to on if you want your varac to accept incoming connections while you are in away mode.. read the help (tooltip) to understand what it is.

Varac worked fine for 8 hours yesterday but then it went wrong again. The message "Ignoring PTT request by the modem etc......" appeared again in the Varac.log screen. After that, transmitting was not possible.

All good. your unattended link is disabled. your VarAC went to AWAY and it can not perform certain actions. Dont know why you set it to on, on the right side where all checkboxes are.

Hello Irad.

I changed Linux Compatible Mode=ON in the VarAC.ini file. After about 8 hours (Varac is on continuously) the problem is back unfortunately.

Hello Marcel. I did not understand the terminology behind "is back".

You mean you start it and is frozen again? or after 8 hours the screen is suddenly frozen ?

I would need to see a screenshot and the end of the log file to understand. There could be many other issues not related to windows 11 update and I want to make sure it is related or something else.
