I'm relatively new to VarAC and have just had a few QSOs. I'm intrigued by the idea of Vmail as an alternative to Winlink. I successfully sent a VarAC Wednesday check in a few weeks ago but have not had any luck today. I only see one beacon that shows as a email gateway and can only intermittently connect to it. Once connected my messages doesn't get sent. I know the band conditions aren't great today but I was able to get a Winlink message out. My concern is that there aren't enough email gateways for this to be viable. Looking for thoughts on that idea.

Mike,
IMHO your posting calls for some clarifications. The VMail is an attempt to create a method to send messages between VarAC users, WITHOUT any use of Internet. The messages are sent either directly, or via (store + forward) mailboxes of peer VarAC users. This scenario is described satisfactorily in VarAC manuals. ON TOP OF THIS recent versions of VarAC promote ability to get the messages delivered via internet. Sending of such messages (which on their way change name from VMails to EMails) is only possible if the sender has internet access, and has the (VarAC => internet) gateway set up. Then the message gets transferred to its addressee as any email message. Till now I have not seen any satisfactory explanation how to set up such gateway, written without mumbo - jumbo use of acronyms which tell me nothing.
