I'm trying to compare the sensitivity/range of the ax25 protocol for broadcast vs varahf beacon/chat. After a previous EDM exercise it seems that beacons really get out, but broadcasts not so much. Anyone do any testing or have any info?
I wish VARA KISS had a selectable option to work in SL1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. This would be great for BROADCASTS over difficult conditions! Problem is who can convince Jose! Any ideas?
Hey Demetre agreed, with our edm group it would be perfect to be able to send a broadcast message with vara protocols, even the low speed one, to all team members on the air to provide basic instructions and frequencies to operate on. Right now it would have to be p2p email and would have to send out hundreds of winlink messages {p2p). Right now we use beacons to allow everyone to know who is there but only call signs. If Jose could do this he would be doing all emergency volunteers a big favor, not to mention people in Grid down to get info in/out or even request help when voice is less useable.
Yes Rob, JS8 has 4 speeds and it can decode any one of them, so why not VARA. The thing is who can convince Jose to do this. Perhaps an EMCOMM group can do better than any individual!
Thanks Gary, excellent answer, helps alot.
Here is 1 post that indicates SL1 (Beacon) is about 9dB more sensitive than SL5 (KISS ASYNC Broadcast)

There was a post about some imperical numbers a while back, SL1 for the Beacon vs SL5 for the Broadcasts. Let me do a search to find it.
