This transceiver does not allow to program a VFO between different bands. So you cannot QSY between e.g. 2m and 70cm via a QSY in VarAC as the cat structure of the TM-D710 does not support it.
BUT by programming a memory every band is possible. So I changed the section for Kenwood TM-D710 in the VarAC_cat_commands.ini for memory use. Check if you have the latest firmware in your TM-D710.
As long as Irad has not changed this section, you can do it with every simple editor. Find attached the new procedure as file VarAC TM-D710 CAT V3_1.pdf

With Bi directional Email gateway, Easy VarAC Cluster settings, Email Alerts, Faster Calling frequency clearance, shorter QSY invites, Verbose GPS, and much more!
Hello VarACers!
As some of you may already know, we released Version 11.4 about a month ago in response to a critical Microsoft bug that was rapidly impacting many users. Due to the urgency of the situation, this was a rushed release—unlike our usual process, we had to skip several steps in our typical launch sequence and weren’t able to properly introduce the new features with our usual fanfare.
Now that the Microsoft issue has been contained, we’re getting back on track. To make up for the missed announcements of V11.4, we’re excited to roll out Version 12, and this time we’re combining the highlights of both V11.4 and V12 into a single comprehensive update.
Some of you may have already experienced parts of what’s new—but now it’s time to dive in and give everything the attention it deserves.
Let’s start with the BIG news in V12:
📢 Introducing: Bi-Directional VarAC Email Gateway
Yes—it’s finally here!
From day one, our vision for the VarAC Email Gateway was always bi-directional—but we knew we had to take it one step at a time. With V12, we’re proud to say: the loop is now fully closed.
VarAC now empowers every user to operate their own bi-directional Email Gateway, allowing your station to seamlessly:
• Forward VMails from HF to Email, and
• Receive Emails and route them back into HF as VMails.
This milestone was made possible by integrating not only with SMTP (which we've used until now for sending emails), but now also with IMAP. In simple terms, VarAC can now retrieve new emails from your inbox, convert them into VarAC VMails, and place them as "Parked/Outgoing" messages in your VMailBox, ready to be transmitted over HF.
And yes—this works even with free email providers like Gmail (with proper setup). The gateway just became truly complete.
Here’s how it works:
STEP 1: Configuring IMAP:
• Start by configuring your VMail Gateway to interact with your email account via IMAP. This can be done under the Gateway Settings tab.
• Use the TEST button to verify both IMAP and SMTP connectivity.
• Note: For services like Gmail, make sure to use the same “app password” for both SMTP (sending) and IMAP (receiving).
This step ensures that your VarAC station can not only send emails, but also fetch incoming ones and convert them into VMails for HF transmission.
Configuring IMAP in your Email gateway
Step 2: Choose Your Preferred Reply-To Method
When a station sends an email through a connected gateway, they now have the flexibility to choose how replies are handled:
• Reply via Email – The response will be delivered directly to their external email inbox (outside the VarAC network).
• Reply via VarAC Gateway – The response will be sent back to the gateway, where it will be converted into a VMail and made available for pickup via HF.
This gives the sender full control over how and where they want to receive replies—whether through traditional email or directly back into the VarAC ecosystem.
Setting a preferred reply-to method
STEP 3: The Redirection Mechanism
When a VMail is redirected to an external email, VarAC automatically appends a special tag at the bottom of the message:<RELAY_TO_CALLSIGN:XXXX>
This tag allows VarAC to track and route replies back to the correct operator.
Here’s how it works:
• When the email recipient replies, the message lands in the gateway’s email inbox.
• VarAC periodically scans the inbox, looking for emails that contain the <RELAY_TO_CALLSIGN:XXXX> tag.
• If the tag is found, VarAC converts the reply into a parked VMail inside the VMailbox of the specified callsign.
• This triggers a VMail relay notification, so the next time that callsign beacons, they’ll be notified of a new incoming VMail—even though it originally came from an email reply.
This smart tagging system closes the loop, enabling smooth and traceable communication between HF and the outside email world.
Fun Fact: "Live Email Gateway Chat"
If you send an email through a gateway and stay connected, and the recipient replies promptly—you’ll receive their reply live while still on the same active link!
We call this use case “Live Email Gateway Chat” — a clever way to carry out a near real-time conversation via the VMail → Email → VMail pipeline. It’s not quite instant messaging, but it comes impressively close, especially over HF.
Now, speaking of gateways…
We’ve taken our new email infrastructure a step further and integrated it with VarAC’s Alert Tags system. The result is:
📢 Introducing: Email alerts
Alert Tags have been around for a while—allowing you to monitor for events like a CQ or Beacon or specific Callsign, Matching a keyword in a Broadcast or a chat etc.
But now there’s something new:You can configure these alerts to trigger an email notification in addition to appearing in the VarAC Alert Center.
So even if you're away from your radio, you can still get instant updates right to your inbox—keeping you connected to the bands that matter to you, anytime, anywhere.
And here’s a bonus: now that we support a bi-directional email gateway, any reply to an email alert will be forwarded back through the gateway to the station that triggered the alert. This is possible because VarAC includes the <RELAY_TO_CALLSIGN:XXX> tag in email alerts as well.
Alright, enough about gateways—let’s shift gears to something equally important: clearing the calling frequency ASAP!
Until now, when you connected with a beaconing station on the calling frequency, both sides exchanged callsigns and SNR reports before sending a QSY invitation.
That’s no longer the case.
📢 Introducing: Post-QSY Call-ID/SNR exchange
In V12, we’ve changed the timing of exchanging call ID and SNR data—this exchange now happens only after the QSY (frequency change) takes place. This means there will be minimal traffic between two stations on the calling frequency until a QSY is initiated.
Our measurements show that with this approach, the QSY process now takes about 10-15 seconds from connection—compared to 30-40 seconds under the previous method. This improvement significantly enhances our ability to share the calling frequency with fewer collisions and less congestion.
The only data exchanged on the calling frequency before QSY will be:
• <AWQ> — indicating “I am away but allowing auto-QSY”
• <Q> — (new tag) indicating “I am here and allowing auto-QSY”
Please note: If auto-QSY is disabled, the system will revert to the current behavior—exchanging Call-ID and SNR on the calling frequency as before.
Now, let’s talk about the VarAC Cluster, one of the most powerful features in the VarAC architecture.
A VarAC Cluster consists of multiple VarAC instances operating simultaneously on different bands, all connected to a centralized database (the “Brain”). This unique setup enables advanced cross-band operations, such as cross-band VMail exchange and, more recently, cross-band Email Gateway support.
Until now, setting up a cluster required manually editing the VarAC INI file, which could be complex and error-prone.
📢 Introducing: Easy Multi-node Cluster setup
With V12, all VarAC cluster parameters are now accessible through a dedicated Multi-Node Cluster section in the settings.
Now, let’s jump to our VarAC-on-the-go enthusiasts. You all love using GPS, right? So why not bring the same detail and feedback from our Verbose SNR feature to GPS?
📢 Introducing: Verbose GPS mode
If your VarAC is connected to a GPS device, a new “Verbose GPS” checkbox will appear on your main screen. Enable it during a QSO, and VarAC will start sending your GPS location every minute.
Now, let’s switch safety to “auto” mode and dive into a series of exciting new features coming your way:
Secondary Logger Support: Log your QSOs to two logging applications simultaneously for greater flexibility and backup.
VarAC Database Checker: A new advanced tool to inspect your VarAC.db for any missing or corrupted elements. (A fixer tool will be introduced in the next version.)
File Safety Alerts: Get warned before opening potentially dangerous files (such as .bat or .exe) to keep your system safe.
Narration Sound Customization: A new setting lets you enable or disable narration sounds for your transmitted beacons, tailoring the experience to your preference.
Callsign History & QRZ Lookup: Added handy ‘Callsign History’ and ‘QRZ Lookup’ buttons to the read VMail form for quick callsign information on incoming VMails.
VarAC Cluster Node Number in Logs: When operating in cluster mode, each log entry now includes the cluster node number, so you always know which node generated each entry.
Consistent Date-Time Format for Gateway VMails: The “compose time” field in gateway VMails now uses your selected date-time format for better consistency.
Cluster Beacon/CQ Filtering: In a VarAC cluster, each instance now loads only its own last-heard Beacons and CQs, reducing clutter and improving relevance.
Improved TO Dropdown Field: The TO dropdown when composing a new VMail has been extended to better display long callsigns and email addresses, enhancing visibility.
Path-Finder Auto Request: When you type your callsign and press Enter, the Path-Finder request is sent automatically, streamlining your workflow.
Instant Connect by Callsign Entry: Pressing Enter after typing a callsign or after selecting one from the dropdown will immediately initiate a connection.
Advanced Beacon Contact Logging: When sending an advanced beacon with a locator, the contact is saved to VarAC.db to retain the last known locator if the station reverts to a standard beacon.
Disable Antenna Tuner When PTT Off: The antenna tuner will no longer activate when changing frequencies if PTT is disabled.
CQ and QSY Popups Brought to Front: These popups are now forced to the foreground to ensure visibility.
Unread VMail Always Visible: Unread messages will appear regardless of the date filter applied in the VMailbox.
Visual Gestures for Reading Messages: Added gesture animations when reading VMails and broadcasts.
No Chat History Notification: You’ll be notified in the datastream if you connect to a station with no previous chat history.
Faster Chat History Load: Optimized loading of old chat history to minimize UI freeze.
Faster Main Screen Load: Improved speed when loading historical data from the database.
Advanced Beacon Warning with Digipeaters: Clear message shown when enabling advanced beacons on VaraFM with digipeaters, which are not supported.
Manual Log Saves to VarAC.db: Clicking "LOG" manually now logs the QSO to the internal VarAC database as well as the ADIF file.
Locator Format Validation: Incoming locator data (beacons/CQ/QSO/Contacts) is validated before being written to the database.
Improved Digipeater Narration: When reading beacons/CQs relayed via digipeaters, "Via" is pronounced properly, and "-" in SSID is narrated as "Dash."
More Gesture Trigger Words: Added additional trigger words like "HIHI" to visual gestures.
File Safety Alerts: Alerts now warn before opening potentially dangerous files (e.g., .bat, .exe).
Canned VMail Subject Tag: Use <SBJ:XXX> in canned messages to predefine the VMail subject.
Canned VMail Email Tag: Use <EM:XXX> in canned messages to predefine the recipient’s email address.
Built-in Check-In Canned Message: New VarAC installations include a default canned message for "VarAC Wednesday check-ins."
Narration Sound Customization: New setting to enable/disable narration sounds for your transmitted beacons.
KISS Debug Mode: Added display of raw KISS packet data for debugging purposes.
External Link Warning: Users are notified before a link is opened in an external browser.
To upgrade from an existing VarAC version:
1. Download the VarAC Installer and run it.
2. Select the current folder where your VarAC resides.
3. The installer will keep your existing settings and history.

In VarAC News & Updates
...Auto beacon/frequency scheduler start and much more!
Hello VarACiers! This is, without a doubt, our biggest release ever! How big? MASSIVE! Normally, we roll out one or two major update with some improvements—but this time, we’re bringing you a whole slew of new features. Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride!
Introducing: VarAC Email Gateway
Imagine this: Your internet is down, but you need to send a critical email. No problem! You hop on the CF and—BAM!—you spot multiple stations broadcasting in their beacon that they operate an email gateway. You compose a VMail, connect, relay, and receive a confirmation that your email has been delivered. This is how it works:
For Email gateway operator:
If you want to run a VMail gateway, here’s what you’ll need to do:
1. Set up an SMTP email account. You can use Gmail or any other provider. To keep things separate, consider creating a dedicated account just for SMTP forwarding. [See this guide for setup instructions.]
2. Choose whether to limit access by callsign or allow all users.
3. Decide if you want to announce your gateway via your beacon or keep it private.
Configuring an Email gateway
When your gateway relays a message, it will appear under the "SENT" tab with the VIA field showing your own email address.
And this is how your email gateway announcements will appear to others in your beacon:
For Email gateway users:
If you want to send a VMail to Email, here’s what you need to know:
• In the email composing section, you’ll see a new "Send to Email" button—just tick it!
• A new, user-friendly dropdown will show your recently contacted Emails/Callsigns for quick access.
• Under Settings, you can enable automatic email sending whenever VarAC connects to an Email gateway station.
Now, onto another BIG feature—one that’s actually connected to the previous updates. You’ve been asking us to include Grid Locators in beacons, and we always said "No."
Well, it’s time for a BIG YES!
Introducing: Advanced Beacon
You now have the option to choose between a STANDARD or ADVANCED beacon. What is an ADVANCED beacon?
Uses the AX25-KISS protocol (similar to broadcasts). Operates at SL2 (Speed Level 2), allowing more data to be sent. Can still be decoded at -18/-19 dB (compared to -22 dB for standard beacons). Includes your Grid Locator. Carries additional data such as Email Gateway Announcements, EmComm station status, and more exciting features in the future.
Important: Only users who upgrade will be able to decode ADVANCED beacons.
Speaking of beacons... If you’re not the type who likes constant beaconing but still want to send a one-time beacon to let everyone know you’re around—good news! You finally have a solution.
Introducing: One-Time Beacon
Simply RIGHT-CLICK the Beacon button, and VarAC will fire a single beacon instantly! You can use this feature whether your beaconing is turned off or even between beacon cycles when it's on.
Now, Let’s Talk About QSOs!
You’re already familiar with the Callsign History tool—it just got a bit of a facelift. But we always felt like something was missing... A central place where you can: See all your VarAC QSOs in one view Filter & sort your contacts easily Generate QSLs on the spot
Well, that missing piece has finally been found!
Introducing: The VarAC QSO Log
Well, this is one of those situations where words aren’t needed—a picture says it all!
Introducing: Received files/images gallery
Over time, you’ve received countless files and images during your QSOs… so why not access them all in one place?
Now you can!
Simply navigate to Tools → Received Files/Images, and you’ll enter the File & Image Gallery, where all your incoming files are neatly organized with: File Name, Callsign of the sender and Received Date.
Click on any file to open it instantly—or, if it’s an image, enlarge it for a better view!
Now, let’s revisit a fantastic feature from the previous version: QSLs!
The new QSL generator was a hit, wasn’t it? But we know many of you wanted quicker access—especially during a QSO or right after it ends—without having to dig through the Callsign History.
Well, we heard you! Now, sending a QSL card for your last QSO is faster and easier than ever.
Introducing: Quick Access to QSL Generator
On the main screen, you’ll now find a brand-new "QSL" button in the bottom right corner.
During a QSO → Clicking it will open the QSL generator preloaded with your current QSO data. After disconnecting → It will automatically load details from your most recent QSO, ready for you to generate and send your QSL instantly.
Now, for a blitz of additional features… Here we go:
Introducing: Link speed indicator
On the bottom left side of your screen, you’ll now find a new speed indicator—giving you real-time insight into your current TX/RW speed!
IMPORTANT: Important: You must redownload VARA HF 4.8.9, as this version includes the necessary data to support this feature. Please note that the modem author did not update the version number, so you cannot verify if you're on the latest version based on the version string alone. To ensure compatibility, you must update the modem manually.
Let me know if you'd like a more casual or more technical version as well!
Introducing: Auto beacon/frequency scheduler start
You can now set VarAC to automatically start beaconing right after startup—no manual activation needed! The same goes for the frequency scheduler—just set it up, and VarAC will handle the rest!
Introducing: Inquire GPS location
You can now request the exact GPS location of your QSO partner using the Inquire module!
Introducing: Custom frequency file
If you manage multiple VarAC profiles, you can now have a separate frequency file (Frequency dropdown list) for each profile!
Simply update this parameter in your VarAC.ini profile file:
FrequenciesCustomFilePath=
Introducing: Cross band last hear peeking
You can now configure VarAC to display last-heard stations across all bands, making it especially useful in multi-band VarAC Cluster mode.
Bonus Update: The "Last Heard Peeking" format has been improved! And it now shows the last 10 callsigns heard, CQs and Beacons together and covers only the past 24 hours for a cleaner view.
But that’s not all—there’s even more! Check out these additional enhancements in V11:
Enhancements/Changes:
• QSL file name now includes sender's callsign.
• Changed "MODE" to "2 WAY" on QSL card for award validity.
• Users must select a slot for CQ or QSY invites (no default Slot 1).
• No extra "RE:" when replying to an already replied VMail.

In Manuals & Troubleshooting
Note: The VarAC team has only tested it with Gmail. We were unable to get it working with the Microsoft (outlook.com) email service. It may work with other SMTP/IMAP email services.
Congratulations on joining the VarAC Email Gateway world!
Before you begin, we recommend creating a dedicated Gmail account for relaying gateway emails instead of using your personal account. This helps keep things organized and separate.
Now lets get started:
Preparations:
1. Go to : https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
1. If you encounter this error, you'll need to enable 2-step verification for your account. You can do this by following this link: https://myaccount.google.com/security
1. Create a new app password. You can call it “VarAC”
1. Copy the password you got.
1. Go to VarAC settings screen -> Email tab
Setting outgoing (SMTP) emails:
1. On the top left – Check the “Enable Email gateway”
2. Enter your gateway Gmail email address.
Note: As some people tend to copy paste it, make sure you extra spaces are added before or after the email address.
1. Set the SMTP password to the “App password” you got from your Gmail account.
NOTE: Make sure you have no extra spaces as well. It is advised to remove all spaces from the password itself also.
1. Make sure the following are configured:
• SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
• SMTP port: 587
• Enable TLS is checked
1. That’s it. Click “SEND TEST EMAIL” and make sure you get a SUCCESS message. If it fails – inspect the VarAC.log file for details.
2. If you receive a "SUCCESS" message but don't see the test email in your gateway inbox (in Gmail), it may have been marked as spam. Please check your Spam folder and mark the email as "Not spam" to ensure proper delivery in the future.
Important Note: Some emails sent by gateways—especially those using newly created email addresses—may initially be marked as spam. As the email address builds a positive sending history, its reputation will improve, and services like Google will be less likely to flag it as spam. To help speed up this process, recipients are encouraged to mark these emails as “Not spam.”
Setting incoming (IMAP) emails
1. On the middle-right section – Check the “Enable incoming emails”
2. Set the IMAP password to the “App password” you got from your Gmail account (for GMail it will be the same one as SMTP password)
3. Make sure the following are configured:
• SMTP server: imap.gmail.com
• SMTP port: 993
• Enable SSL is checked
1. That’s it. Click “IMAP TEST” and make sure you get a SUCCESS message. If it fails – inspect the VarAC.log file for details.
Important note: VarAC only pulls unread emails from the gateway inbox. Do not manually mark emails as read, as this will prevent VarAC from detecting and retrieving new messages
Troubleshooting
Symptom: You successfully sent a test message, but it doesn't appear in your inbox.
• Possible Cause: New Gmail addresses often lack credibility at first, so the message was likely flagged as spam.
• Resolution: Check your spam folder and mark the message as “Not spam.” If a few more people do the same with your gateway emails, Google will begin to trust your new address and stop filtering it.
Symptom: You're using Gmail, entered all the settings correctly, but the SMTP sending test still fails.
• Possible Cause: You may have used your regular Gmail password instead of the app-specific password required for SMTP.
• Resolution: Generate and use an app-specific password, as described earlier.
Symptom: The IMAP (incoming email) test fails even though your settings appear to be correct. And sometimes also getting error like "The server certificate has the following errors: The revocation function was unable to check revocation for the certificate".
• Possible Cause: An antivirus program may be scanning and blocking incoming IMAP connections.
• Resolution: Disable this feature or add an exception for VarAC. For example, in Norton 360, the setting is called “Scan inbound emails (POP3, IMAP4).”
Appendix:
If you ever want to delete this app password – simply go again to: https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and delete it:

Will there ever be a native Linux version of VarAC?
I get this question quite often, and the short answer is:
Never say never, but realistically, no.
Here’s why:
1. The VARA Modem itself is Windows-based – Even if VarAC were ported to Linux, you’d still need a Windows machine to run the VARA modem. That defeats the purpose.
2. Linux compatibility via WINE – You can already run VarAC and VARA on Linux using WINE, even on a Raspberry Pi. Here's just one example: https://dl1gkk.com/winlink-express-varac-and-vara-modem-on-a-raspberry-pi-5/
3. Massive codebase & maintenance – VarAC's code is huge. Rewriting it for Linux would take an enormous effort, and maintaining two codebases for a relatively small Linux user base (~15%) isn't practical.
Bottom line
Considering all three points—especially #1 and #2—creating a native Linux version simply doesn’t make sense. Maybe that will change someday if VARA offers a linux version or when I have more time and fewer tasks on my to-do list, but for now, the cost-to-benefit ratio just isn’t there.

Whether it’s tagging your closest friends or adding meaningful labels like “HQ” for an EmComm activity, this feature lets you organize and highlight the callsigns that matter most.
📢 Introducing: Callsign tags
A new file, "VarAC_callsign_tags.conf", is now available in your VarAC directory. To use it, simply add lines like "NC3Z,Buddy" and these tags will appear on your Beacon and CQ lists.
Callsign tags
Let’s talk about locators. You may have noticed that Beacons and Standard CQs don’t include locators. Why is that? It’s a limitation of the VARA protocol, which prioritizes using the lowest possible speed in these scenarios—allowing only the callsign to be transmitted.
But here’s the good news: what if you’ve already had a QSO with that station and have a "Last Known Locator" saved from a previous exchange? Now, we can put that information to good use!
📢 Introducing: Last known locator
In version 10.4, this new feature is enabled by default. If a "Last Known Locator" is available for a CQ or Beacon, it will appear alongside it with a hourglass icon. If you prefer to disable this feature, you can easily do so in the settings menu.
Last known locator
Let’s move on. Imagine you’re in a QSO and scrolling up to review previous messages. While you’re reading, a new message comes in. Previously, VarAC would automatically scroll back to the bottom of the data stream to display the new message. Well, not anymore!
📢 Introducing: Scroll down indicator
When you scroll up, VarAC will automatically display a "quick scroll down" button. However, if a new message arrives while you're focused on an earlier part of the QSO, the icon will flash green, alerting you to a new message waiting further down.
Scroll down indicator
Here’s something we should have done a long time ago, but honestly, we were too lazy to tackle it. How many times have you wanted to resize those Beacon/CQ/Log sections to get a clearer view of everything you need?
📢 Introducing: Adjustable Beacons/CQ/Log area size
You can now easily resize those sections by dragging and dropping the separators (the 3 dots) between them. Don’t worry—VarAC will remember your settings, so when you launch it again, everything will be just the way you left it.
Adjustable Beacons/CQ/Log size
Alright, now for our GPS enthusiasts! Many of you use VarAC on the go, whether you're participating in POTA or on an EmComm mission. Until now, VarAC only displayed your GPS position on the screen…
📢 Introducing: GPS Log file
Now, you can also save those GPS readings to a file for logging and analysis purposes.
Just enable the feature in the settings menu, choose a log file name, and you're all set. Your GPS data will be saved to disk automatically.
GPS logging
Now, let’s talk about SSIDs—those numbers that were common during the packet radio days when stations had a number at the end (e.g., 4Z1AC-7). These SSIDs are still widely used by VARA FM operators, especially when working with VARA digipeaters.
📢 Introducing: Full SSID support
SSIDs are now supported across most VarAC features, including CQs, Broadcasts, and even with digipeaters. However, please note that there are some limitations if you set an SSID for your own VarAC callsign. Don’t worry—VarAC will inform you of these limitations when you make the change.
SSID support
Do you enjoy checking out other stations' data? If you're already using the "Last Heard Peeking" feature to view the last 10 callsigns your QSO partners have heard, we’ve got a new peeking feature just for you!
📢 Introducing: Last heard callsign peeking
YES! You can now connect with someone and easily inquire about the last time they heard a specific station you're interested in. Just open the "Inquire" module, select "Last Heard Peeking," and you’ll have the info you need.
Last heard callsign peeking
But that’s not all—there’s even more! Take a look at these additional enhancements you’ll find in V10.4:
Enhancements/Changes:
• Added new tags: <MYTIME> and <UTCTIME> to include time in your automated messages.
• VMail Drafts folder: Store VMails that are "works in progress" for later updates and sending.
• Added a "Skip if Active" option in the Application Launcher.
• Removing queued, but yet-to-be-transmitted broadcasts once a connection is established.
• Added a file explorer button next to each application in the application launcher for easy EXE selection.
• Replying to an urgent VMail is automatically marked as urgent.
• New tag <FS> to send your own frequency scheduler plan.
• Removed the inquire tags from the Gestures list (to create extra space), as they now appear in the new "Inquire" module.
• New GPS settings: Reconnect GPS indefinitely.
• New GPS settings: Show live GPS coordinates in the bottom strip on the main VarAC screen.
• You can now disable the "Leave a message" popup upon connecting to an unattended station (either from settings → QSO or from the popup itself).
• In EmComm mode, you can disable QSY popups once connected on a CF (new setting).
• Added custom CQ option "FF" for Flora & Fauna.
• Send PSK-Reporter self-report if remaining on the same frequency every 4 hours.
• Added an "Are you sure?" popup when canceling a VMail you’ve already started composing.
• Customization of the default QSO log (ADIF) comment text (override the default comment "QSO with VarAC").
• Added "Copy Selected" on the right-click menu in the message viewer popup (when double-clicking a message in the Datastream).
• Made URLs clickable in the message viewer popup.
To upgrade from an existing VarAC version:
1. Download the VarAC Installer and run it.
2. Select the current folder where your VarAC resides.
3. The installer will keep your existing settings and history.

In VarAC News & Updates
and much more...
Hello, fellow VarAC users!
We’ve been hard at work preparing an exciting new version, packed with features and enhancements just for you! Since V10, we haven't stopped to make this release possible. So, take a deep breath—let’s dive in!
We’ll start with a long-requested feature: the ability to customize the callsign dropdown list.
📢 Introducing: Callsigns dropdown customization
In Settings, under the QSO tab, you’ll find a new option called “Callsign Dropdown.” Here, you can choose from three different settings:
• RECENT: Displays the callsigns you’ve recently connected with (excluding Pings), just like before.
• POPULAR: VarAC will populate the list with the callsigns you’ve linked with most frequently over the past 60 days—perfect for reconnecting with your regular contacts.
• CUSTOM: Allows you to set a fixed callsign list. This is ideal if you want quick access just to friends or, for EmComm teams, just your team’s callsigns for streamlined communication.
Callsign dropdown customization
Tired of having to open multiple applications before launching VarAC, like your rig control software (Hamlib? FLrig?) or logging tools? Say goodbye to the hassle!
📢 Introducing: Application launcher
With V10.2, we’re bringing you an intuitive tool to manage all your additional apps. For each application, you can decide when it should start, set a delay before VarAC launches the next app, choose whether to restart it if it’s already running, and even specify if it should close when VarAC exits.
Just go to Settings -> Application Launcher for detailed instructions on setting it up.
Application launcher
VMails are a core feature in VarAC, allowing us to stay connected and communicate asynchronously with friends. Some VMails, however, may carry extra importance, especially during a crisis or when handling critical information.
📢 Introducing: Urgent VMails
With V10.2, you can now mark a VMail as "Urgent" when composing. Here’s what happens:
• A relay notification will appear as "Urgent" on the recipient’s end, marked with a small red icon in both the Relay Center and Beacon list.
• In the Mailbox, Urgent VMails will also be flagged with a red symbol for visibility.
By default, any VMails composed while in EmComm mode will automatically be marked as Urgent, unless the operator chooses otherwise.
Note: Urgent relay notifications work only if both users are on V10.2.
Urgent VMails
Your VarAC stores a significant amount of data: QSO logs, chat history, SNR readings, beacons, CQs, and more. Losing this information due to a malfunction can be both frustrating and costly.
📢 Introducing: VarAC Backups
While you may have backed up data manually before, VarAC now takes care of this automatically!
With V10.2, VarAC will automatically create a backup to a folder of your choice every time you close the application. By default, it keeps up to 10 copies in this folder.
You can adjust these settings by navigating to Settings -> RIG & VARA Configuration -> Misc. -> Backup.
Backups are saved as ZIP files to conserve space.
To restore VarAC on your current or a new PC, simply unpack the backup file, and you’re set.
Note: As your database grows, backups may take a few seconds. You’ll see a clear notification on your screen once the backup is complete.
VarAC Backups
Let’s focus on EmComm for a moment. In emergency communications, certain standard VarAC functions can slow things down, and every second counts.
📢 Introducing: EmComm configuration center
With V10.2, you can set specific behaviors tailored for EmComm operations. Head to Settings -> RIG & VARA Configuration -> EmComm to enable or disable features suited for emergency use, such as:
• Disabling Call-IDs
• Skipping SNR reports
• Automatically approving incoming files (regardless of size)
Please ensure you comply with local regulations when adjusting any of these settings.
Additionally, there’s a new "Last Connection Peeking" feature for EmComm mode. When enabled, this allows your EmComm team members to view your last five connections through the INQUIRE module.
EmComm Configuration Center
What if your rig has multiple antennas, and you want to use a different antenna for each band? VarAC has you covered!
📢 Introducing: Automatic antenna selector
With V10.2, you can now send specific CAT commands per band to switch your rig to the appropriate antenna automatically.
Go to Settings -> RIG & VARA Configuration -> RIG, where you’ll find this new feature.
Click the helper button "(?)" for more details.
Automatic antenna selector
But that’s not all—there’s even more! Take a look at these additional enhancements you’ll find in V10.2:
Enhancements/Changes:
• Suppressing 'Is Typing': Now activates in low SNR conditions, even when the other station’s signal is weak.
• Inquire Window Control: Option to close the Inquire window after each inquiry or keep it open for additional inquiries.
• Countdown Timer for Large File Alerts: Alerts for large incoming files now include a countdown timer and stay on top of other windows.
• Block Callsign: Right-click on a callsign in the main screen to block it instantly.
• Translate Button in VMails: Added a translation button to VMails, now with automatic source language detection.
• New 8m Band Option: Added the 8m band as a selectable option.
• SNR Broadcast Receipt Confirmation: Updated instructions on how "Ask for SNR" broadcasts can serve as a receipt confirmation.
• Updating the DXCC Prefix: Added the "TM" prefix to the DXCC country list.
• Auto Scroll on Callsign History: The QSO table now auto-scrolls to display recent QSOs.
• Enhanced SNR data Copy: The copied SNR data from the SNR chart now includes QSO time information.
• SNR Graph Tooltips: Hovering over points on the SNR graph now shows tooltips with data values.
• Antenna Tuner and Selector in Rig Tester: The Rig Configuration Tester now also activates the antenna tuner and antenna selector.
• Single QSO Display: In the Callsign History, select any entry to display individual QSO details.
• New Auto QSY Rejection Tag: If Auto QSY is declined due to an out-of-range frequency, the tag "<QJO>" indicates the reason.
• Detailed Exit Process Display: When closing VarAC, a display now shows the status of each closing task.
To upgrade from an existing VarAC version:
1. Download the VarAC Installer and run it.
2. Select the current folder where your VarAC resides.

¿No tienes ninguna respuesta?
• ¿Quieres dejar tu EQUIPO abierto y aceptar conexiones entrantes mientras te dedicas a tu propio negocio?
• "DING!" -> hará sonar un “ding”.
• "HIHI" -> enviará un par de emojis sonrientes 😀😀
• "TU!" -> enviará "THANK YOU 🙏".
Mensajes preparados y etiquetas VarAC

In Troubleshooting
You might have experienced this yourself or heard someone else expressing frustration about it.
"Broken", indicated by any of the following symptoms:
• Loss of all settings, reverted to VarAC defaults.
• Numerous error messages regarding the inability to read certain VarAC files.
• Complete loss of history.
These symptoms share a common root cause: your VarAC is unable to access its configuration/DB files due to permission limitations at the folder level.
Allow me to elucidate why this occurrence can occur and provide a simple solution to remedy it.
VarAC can be installed in two different ways.
• An Installer (exe file)
• A package (Zip file)
In 99% of cases where people complain about upgrade failures, it's usually related to the installer version (exe).
Now, let's delve deeper into this issue.
By default, the VarAC installer suggests installing it in the C:\VarAC directory upon the first installation. This is because in Windows, installing software into the C:\Program Files\ directory comes with permission limitations that may result in errors, such as a failing upgrade at a later stage. It's likely that during your first installation, you overrode VarAC's suggestion, leading to permission issues.
Similarly, the VARA modem itself defaults to the C:\VARA directory for similar reasons—to prevent numerous issues.
So, in 99% of cases where an upgrade using the installer leaves you with a "broken" VarAC, it's often because you initially installed it under "C:\Program Files" instead of "C:\VarAC".
If you prefer to keep VarAC in the "Program Files" directory, feel free to do so at your own risk, but ensure you run the VarAC installer as an administrator (Right-click -> Run as administrator).
However, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you make the effort to move VarAC to a location where it can provide you with years of quiet, safe, and smooth upgrades.
Here are the steps to safely move your VarAC to a new permanent home. It's important to read through all the steps before you begin to familiarize yourself with the process:
1. Backup your VarAC directory content aside. I mean copy all the files to a different location.
2. Uninstall VarAC. There is an "Uninstall.exe" file in the VarAC directory. Simply run it. This will remove all traces of VarAC from your computer.
3. Now Download a fresh Installer from the VarAC website
4. Run the installer and make sure you Install it under C:\VarAC when asked.
5. DO NOT LAUNCH VarAC (Just yet) after the installation.
6. Now Restore ONLY the following files from your backup (taken at step #1) to your new VarAC home (C:\VarAC):
- VarAC.db
- VarAC.ini
- VarAC_alert_tags.conf
- VarAC_frequency_schedule.conf
- VarAC_frequencies.conf
- VarAC_cat_commands.ini
- VarAC_auto_qsy_allowed_frequencies.conf
Now run VarAC. If you followed these instructions precisely - you should be good to go.
Next time you have a VarAC update - it will lead you automatically to the C:\VarAC directory and will save you from the troubles you have encountered before.
I highly advise running VarAC upgrades as Administrator every time. Simply right-click and select "Run as administrator." This precaution will help you avoid potential issues and streamline the upgrade process.
Good luck!

In VarAC News & Updates
With adaptive broadcast speed, Special CQ types + Locator, VMail relay indicator, New settings screen, UI multilingual support and much more!
Howdy, VarACiers!
This VarAC version has been in development for some time. Two significant reasons contributed to the delay. Firstly, we were extensively occupied with rewriting the VarAC UI to accommodate multiple languages. Additionally, we collaborated closely with the VARA author to integrate new modem-side features for VarAC's enhancement. The outcome is remarkable, making the wait worthwhile.
Now, as always, let's delve into the latest and most remarkable features of VarAC V8.6.2
📢 Introducing: Adaptive Broadcast Speed
VARA and VarAC now offers three Speed Levels (SL) for broadcasts:
SL1 (18bps): the lowest speed capable of reliable decoding even at -21dB.
SL2 (41bps): can be decoded at -18dB.
SL4 (88bps): can be decoded at -14dB.
The previously available SL5 level has been deprecated as it was not effective for our needs.
To ensure a seamless experience, VARA speed will now be selected based on the message length. In essence, shorter messages that can fit into one or two VARA packets will be sent at the lowest possible speed.
The removal of VARA SL5 has taken the maximum broadcast length from 91 to 81. However, this restriction now only applies to the calling frequency. If you initiate a roundtable chat with your friends outside the calling frequency, the broadcast size limit extends to 150 characters.
This feature marks a significant improvement in our ability to conduct round-table discussions using broadcasts. Broadcasts can now be well decoded, even at -21dB , a notable improvement from the typical limit of -12dB using SL5.
Adaptive broadcast speed
📢 Introducing: Multilingual UI
VarAC has supported all languages since its inception, but its user interface was previously only available in English. This limitation hindered the expansion of the VarAC user base in countries where English is not commonly spoken.
To address this, the VarAC engine was rewritten, allowing all texts in the VarAC UI to be customized via an external .ini file called VarAC_UI_languages.ini.
Many VarAC users volunteered to translate the VarAC UI into various languages. While this effort is ongoing, the current version offers UI support for some of the main VarAC elements in English, German, Chinese, Hebrew, Slovak, Japanese and Dutch.
Serbian & Italian translations are currently in progress and will be included in the next version.
You can select your preferred language from both the "Appearance & sounds" and "My information" settings.
Let's give a round of applause to our VarAC translation team for making this possible!
• Serbian: YU1NKA/DM1NKA - Andreja Kostić
• German: OE3CRD - Christian Steger
• Chinese: BH6ABO - Xiangtao Tao
• Japanese: JA1VBN - Tetsuro Hanazawa
• Slovak: OM8GRS - Marek Polak
• Greek: SV1UY - Dimitrios Valaris
• Dutch: PE0CD - Chris Dekker
• Italian: IZ3XNJ - Stefano Comelli
If you'd like to join the effort and translate into your language, please get in touch with us.
Multilingual UI
📢 Introducing: Special CQ types + Locator
The revolution in VARA broadcasts now enables VarAC to utilize the new VARA un-proto packets for enhanced functionalities.
In addition to the standard CQ, users can now initiate a special CQ, comprising two additional elements:
• CQ type (selectable from a dropdown list or enter your own)
• Grid Locator
This new CQ is transmitted in SL2, which is nearly as efficient as SL1, the speed of standard CQ transmissions.
The CQ wizard has been updated to accommodate these new CQ options.
Please note that the additional Type & Locator fields will only appear if you have received at least one special type of CQ.
CQ types
📢 Introducing: New VMail Relay indicator
The relay notification mechanism has been enhanced. In addition to the RELAY alerts displayed at the bottom strip, they will now also be highlighted in a more prominent manner within the Beacons sections. If you notice a small envelope icon, it indicates that this station has a VMail waiting for you.
New VMail relay notification indicator
📢 Introducing: Brand new settings screen
Bid farewell to the cluttered, overcrowded settings screen.
Welcome the new tab-based layout for the settings screen:
New settings screen
📢 Improved Pathfinder & relay notifications
Both Pathfinders and relay notifications now utilize the New VARA un-proto packets, benefiting from super slow speed (SL1/2) transmission.
Consequently, these transmissions can now be effortlessly decoded even at signal levels ranging from -18 to -21dB.
But hold on, there's more! Here's an extensive list of all the thrilling new features and enhancements in VarAC V8.6:
New features
• Interface localization - multilingual UI support using a new configuration file (VarAC_UI_languages.ini) that comes with predefined languages while allowing personalization. Changing UI language under Settings --> Appearance and sounds.
• New settings form - divided to tabs for best orientation.
• Brand new broadcasts mechanism - sending broadcasts on lower VARA speed levels for optimal decoding at challanging SNR levels.
• Special CQ! calling CQ POTA/QRP/NA/DX... and even your own custom CQ call. (Requires ;atest VARA modem version)
• Including Locator in special CQs
• Showing vmail relay notification in the beacons list
Enhancements/Changes
• Removing the "datastream" & "broadcat" gray labels. Changing the table column names to reflect their content.
• New VarAC.ini (only) parameter: BeaconGraceTimeSeconds : Wait time from when you switch frequency until the beacon is fired (default 10)
• Show only pathfinders of myself (ignore all others) - new settings.
• Supporting "Enter" command in Text based CAT commands using the string "[ENT]". Example : PTTOn=TX[ENT]
• Alert center is now resizable
• Suppressing VARA "encryption disabled" messages for better readability.
• Random wait time after the busy indicators turned off. Reduce the likelyhood for broadcasts and beacons collisions.
• QSY popup remains always on-top until dismissed by the user. It is also more visible now.
• QSY invitations are prioritized and placed on the top of the message queue.
• When disconnecting and there is still AWAY/AWQ messages being transmitted, they will not be returned to the message queue to avoid duplicate tag transmission upon next connection.
• Accessibility feature : ESC button takes to the datastream (for the visual impaired users.)
• Automatically unchecking the "I'm away" when calling CQ.
To upgrade from an existing VarAC version:
• Download the VarAC Installer and run it.

In VarAC News & Updates
I am excited to announce a new feature that Jose (EA5JVK) and myself have been diligently working on to enhance your experience: VARA adaptive broadcast speed.
VARA now offers three Speed Levels (SL) for broadcasts:
• SL1 – 18bps – the lowest speed capable of reliable decoding even at -21dB.
• SL2 – 41bps – can be decoded at -18dB.
• SL4 – 88bps – can be decoded at -14dB.
The previously available SL5 level has been deprecated in this version due to inefficiency for our needs.
To ensure a seamless experience, VARA speed will now be selected based on the message length. In essence, shorter messages that can fit into one or two VARA packets will be sent at the lowest possible speed. While there isn't a definitive line for message lengths, your callsign length and destination callsign also play a role. In summary:
• SL1 - Up to 3 characters, stretching to 5-6 for messages sent to "ALL" with a short sender callsign. Ideal for simple greetings like "HI" or "GE".
• SL2 – 3-33 characters.
• SL4 – 33-81 characters.
In the next version of VarAC, we will enforce an 81-character limit (currently 91).
This feature marks a significant improvement in our ability to conduct round-table discussions using broadcasts. I've personally witnessed decoding at -21dB recently, a notable improvement from the typical -12dB using SL5.
I am confident you will appreciate this new feature, which also encourages brevity and effectiveness to benefit from the lower speed levels. Additionally, the next VarAC version will leverage this capability by sending Pathfinder requests and Vmail relay notifications at the lowest speed possible, extending their reach to greater distances.
To enjoy this new feature and ensure compatibility with others, it is necessary to upgrade VARA to version 4.8.3. No changes are required for VarAC.
73s!

Same goes for VARA-FM (4.3.2) and VARA-SAT (4.4.0).
Hello VarACiers.
A new VARA-HF V4.8.1 was recently released along with new versions also for VARA-FM and VARA-SAT.
THESE VERSIONS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OLDER VERSIONS OF VARA MODEMS WHEN IT COMES TO VARAC BROADCASTS, PATHFINDER AND RELAY NOTIFICATIONS.
In other words - VARA-HF V4.8.1 can only decode V4.8.1 broadcasts / pathfinders and relay notifications.

In VarAC News & Updates
Hello, VarACiers!
We are delighted to introduce VarAC V8.4.4 to you today, featuring a host of thrilling new enhancements. This release primarily centers around a comprehensive overhaul of the DataStream, encompassing changes to its appearance and behavior, alongside the addition of numerous exciting new features.
--
Introducing: DataStream Tabular view
Until today, the DataStream consisted of a mere collection of incoming and outgoing rows without a defined structure. However, it has now been transformed into a structured format, comprising rows and columns that allow you to easily discern the actions and timestamps of each contributor. If you prefer the traditional view, you can navigate to Settings, select Appearance, go to DataStream Tabular View, and uncheck the option.
--
Introducing: Reply on message
We've all experienced this situation during a leisurely QSO, where your response to a message/question can be delayed and, and seems disconnected from the ongoing conversation. Following the convention of contemporary chat applications, you can now utilize the "Reply" icon located on the right. When used, your reply will be neatly linked to the corresponding message, ensuring context is maintained.
--
Introducing: DataStream Image viewer
Upon receiving an image, it will now be displayed as a compact thumbnail within its designated column in your DataStream. Clicking on this thumbnail will open the image in a separate window, allowing you to expand it for better visibility, making resizing a breeze.
--
Introducing: DataStream history load
Tired of the empty DataStream every time you launch VarAC? Say goodbye to that frustration! Now, VarAC will automatically load the previous 24 hours of DataStream activity upon startup, allowing you to seamlessly pick up where you left off.
--
Introducing: DataStream data picker
Previously, it could be quite a challenge to pick specific segments of your chat while the DataStream continuously filled with new messages, causing everything to shift around. However, with the latest update, you can effortlessly right-click on a row and choose "QSO Log - Set Name/QTH/Loc," which will open the message in a separate window, allowing you to conveniently copy or tag specific portions of it.
--
Introducing: My VarAC statistics
You've likely pondered these questions: How many VarAC QSOs have I conducted? What was the highest SNR report I ever received? With V8.4.4, we introduce a summary dashboard that compiles these (and many other) intriguing statistics. Additionally, we plan to incorporate even more features into this model in future releases. To access your individual statistics dashboard, just navigate to Tools -> Statistics.
--
Introducing: VarAC New version indicator
Starting today, VarAC will keep you informed about updates. A new indicator in the top right corner will illuminate when a new version becomes available. Clicking the link will direct you to the VarAC website, where you can download the latest version.
--
Introducing: Prepopulating QSO log data
With the introduction of V8.4.4, when you establish a connection with a station, it will now automatically fill in your QSO log entries based on your prior QSOs. However, should new data be received during the ongoing QSO, it will seamlessly overwrite the pre-loaded information.
--
Introducing: CQ/Beacon country name
Hover your mouse cursor over a CQ/Beacon, and the tooltip will now display the corresponding country name.
--
Introducing: Unattended links checkbox
Another significant addition is the introduction of the unattended links checkbox. Certain regulations, like FCC Part 97.221, authorize unattended links on specific frequencies only, with beaconing remaining a permissible operation. If you want to maintain beaconing functionality while, for any reason, you need to disable incoming connections while you are away, you can now find a new checkbox on the primary VarAC console to achieve this. Kindly be aware that incoming connections will be declined exclusively when the "I'm Away" status is activated, whether done manually or automatically.
--
But hold on, there's more! Here's an extensive list of all the thrilling new features and enhancements in VarAC V8.4.4:
>>New features
• DataStream refactor - New Layout, New features!
• Load chat history upon VarAC startup - Continue where you left it
• Image viewer - Click an image thumbnail to view magnify

In VarAC News & Updates
Greetings, VarACiers!
Today, let's delve into the realm of images. As a former SSTV enthusiast, I have come to realize that it's high time we add some excitement to VarAC image transfer.
Many of you have experienced the arduous process of sending a 100K image, only to find out that it takes an eternity. Moreover, compressing an image can be a daunting task, especially if you are not well-versed in graphics editing software.
But fear not, for those days are now behind us.
📢 Introducing: Image compression
VarAC now offers a convenient image compression tool with a unique twist. Taking inspiration from SSTV (Slow Scan Television), you have the option to incorporate your own callsign and SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) reports directly into the image. This distinctive feature sets it apart, ensuring a personalized touch to your compressed images.

Bug fixes
"Connect and relay now" option on the mailbox dropdown menu did not work.
Checking illegal characters in the TO/VIA fields on broadcasts
QSY to the same frequency resulted in VMAIL forwards on the CF.
Forwarding Vmails to a station (ex 4Z1AC) even if the VMails TO field is a complex callsign (ex 4Z1AC/P)
If the frequency was busy when trying to connect, it kept showing a "." (dot) every second even after connected.
When disconnected, not re-queueing the tags <TL>, <QSYR>, <QSYJ>
If the VARA modem died during QSO for any reason (Crash/Corrupted packet) VarAC did not QSY back and remained stuck in "connected" state.

Not allowing to type manually info the frequency indicator
In settings, not resetting the psk checkboex if loading settings while "linux compatible mode" is ON.
