I run VarAC for HF to a Flex Radio and VarAC FM to a Kenwood TS790, both at the same time on the same computer - no problem. I have separate installations of VARA HF and FM modem, with two installations of VarAC - one pointed to VARA HF modem and one pointed to VARA FM modem.

If you turn off Beacon before changing bands, it won't Beacon until you re-enable it.

I don't see why not. The Tech licensee is transmitting on their allowed VHF band, but not directly on HF. I see it like unlicensed individuals being able to send email via Internet to a Winlink address that is retrieved by a licensed ham by RF. I'd do it.

Encryption has obvious utility, but once you use it, you're not acting as a ham radio operator; even if licensed and on amateur frequency allocations. The wish for encryption capability is for communication security (what else) - not necessarily amateur radio communications. VarAC works for services other than ham radio, i.e. CB, and may not be legal for other services but is between the user and regulating authorities. Encryption is the same - between the user and regulators. I too wish VarAC had encryption as an option.

This should work to encrypt text before pasting into the data box or files before sending. I've not yet tried it with VarAC, but see no reason why it won't work. This app works well otherwise. https://paranoiaworks.mobi

The obsession with force QSY in VarAC is really a bit much. If in VarAC, why not all the bands, all the modes? Someone is using a frequency, well ... let's push a button and remote force their radio to QSY them to be someone else's problem. Pfft Those wanting to mind other's busy has gotten out of hand. For everyone you want to inconvenience, someone else will want to change your behavior, too. Be careful what you wish for.

I have substituted a canned message for Ping. I connect, send VSI SNRR VER, then disconnect. Many times, this is after my Ping has timed out with only seconds left to complete successfully.

The unintended consequences of neutering Ping is that Connect/SNRR/DISC is the new Ping.

I find this change to make VarAC less useful; especially when trying to ascertain the viability of contact with weak stations. The Ping now times out before completing on good contacts like -04. This is a functional hobbling of VarAC IMO.

TL;DR If you use VarAC on 60M, you risk DHS busting down your door at 3 AM and shooting your dog. ;)

doh! ;) I have had so many people start chatting when I am AWAY, I forgot that they "should" be seeing a pop-up. I just rarely see it and others seem to not see it or ignore it. Maybe it is losing focus on some systems?

What happened? Were you able to ultimately make your contact?
