If the vara modem ini file could be accessed and updated, that would enable various vara modem setting to be stored and re-called .. vara modem is only provided with a single option for radio and control settings , other ros systems , have multiple user profiles , stored in the ini file .. there where intended for a different user base

DX summit has the same facility ,click the call and a set of options pop-up click vocap and gives band predictions etc ..must still be a option ! 73-G

Closest , would be the run two vara modem sessions , one stand alone , in monitor mode , showing the RX audio , The other the tx/rx modem used for chat, then the monitor modem would show the channel traffic, but , only if the frames met the required s/n level , at your-rx , would have to be the HF version , Vara was designed to move large data volumes in the shortest possible time , the chat function was never part of the concept, originally provided as talk back during file transfer - hence features are not available in the original versions. there is no broadcast function, other than the beacon and cq, which have been provided , as part of the vara-c project. 73-G

There is a kiss interface , with burst packet transmission for aprs provided by the vara modem, but the format is not compatible with the on-air packet system , it uses encapsulated coding, which, I suspect is similar to the opera qso mode, where a min of 40% recovery is needed , in blocks or randomly along the time line .. but the data payload is the same as the packet based system , 11/2021 system was in development > VARA Broadcast frame (114 bytes). This provides a new way to send solid DATA frames with a greater range than Packet 1200/300 and using less power

Only took 4 years -) , oddly only vara is now singularly listed as dynamic, where there are other modes , also auto configure , like pactor Q are V-Mode users now able to log the used mode against qso's and award entry ? Similar to the psk-map , one click on the list , would bring up the vocap coverage map based on your location , ie https://www.voacap.com/areapredictions/62be0f62c700b/ however this is the reply these days - 403 Forbidden (voacap.com) So either the function is no longer provided or the links coded into ros/opera apps are no longer valid Would be worth, checking to see if the function or similar is still provided ? 73-Graham g0nbd

@k3xr Ok Dan, I think, the only way to run x2 vara modem , is to run from separate directories , solo, no need to link to anything etc , you can parallel the RX audio to the monitor modem, while the other remains the active tx/rx ...rx only, is not affected by sdr delays or web delays , just time shifted . 73-Graham

PA1SDP , Probably the best to advise , has run a AO100 Opera beacon set up for some time now, there are a local Dutch group experimenting with AO100 and other uWave projects , I think on this forum ? There already exist V-sat ground station, 73-G

The only information I've been able to copy are call signs in both the "Last heard beacons" and the "Last heard CQ calls Dan To monitor channel traffic, the only way is to select 'Monitor' on the vara modem , then the text prints on the modem itself .. as long as the s/n matches the level monitored Toggling between monitor/ standby rx , is the same as loading a different application , standby receiver monitors , beacons , cq's and connect calls , these use a special mfsk format, where as the main modem uses a combination of frames and formats 73-Graham g0nbd

That's a no-go, The modem has to be set to 'monitor' , to monitor the channel traffic, which lists on the modem- and then, will only decode the frame, if the s/n is acceptable , ie if the s/n at the qso stations , enables the faster levels to be engaged and the signal at the monitor is much lower, nothing will be decoded Switching modem modes, re-configures the modem , allowing beacons , cq's connects etc to be detected and acted upon , forced to send cq or beacon, or responding to connect request by entering into arq link establishment , the linked arq modem , will not monitor channel traffic . There is also a KISS mode , that sends robust un-connected data frames for aprs usage 73-Graham g0nbd

Access to the power level function, via the CAT would also be useful , to allow setting carrier level from the App and form part of the Tune process , with a option to store the power required for Tune something like select tune store working power load tune power carrier on carrier off load working power -end 73-Graham g0nbd
