Good News: I made the program stop sending that popup by just setting CAT to the IC-M710. The program does not control IC-M8802, but thinks it is doing so, so the popup does not appear even if for some reason I clicked on the channel slider. Now how to remotely control frequency of rigs not listed in VarAC CAT, Omnirig or FLrig. I found that rigctl.exe, part of the Hamlib download, makes it easy to control a larger list of radios, and that includes my IC-M802. But rigctl is not supported by VarAC software either. So I found a way to remotely control unsupported rigs when using VarAC. Download Hamlib. Add the folder containing rigctl to PATH in Windows. Look up your rig in a table provided in Hamlib by typing rigctl -l on command line. Read the file rigctl.1.html. I created batch files on Desktop, one per VarAC channel in 20m. For example CH3.bat contains the one line: rigctl -r COM5 -m 30002 F 14102750 where the 30002 is the Hamlib code for the IC-M802 and its remote connector is ported to COM5. The F xxx.... changes both RX and TX frequencies. While this is not true remote control by VarAC, at least it should be sufficient to let me quickly select any of the channel frequencies following the prompt by VarAC. Doug KG6U

Hi Irad, I have been playing with remote control on my IC-M802 using Hamlib's rigctl app. rigctl.exe supports not only those Mxxx but looks to me like it supports the greatest number of rigs of any app out there. If VarAC can use rigctl, then there is no need for ANY individual rig control code to reside within VarAC and no need to calculate a checksum - rigctl does all that already. For example, at the cmd prompt, with my M802 connected to port 5, I enter: rigctl -r COM5 -m 30002 F 1410575 M USB 2400 This sets the M802 frequency to 14.10575 MHz and USB mode with 2400Hz passband. The 30002 is a reference to model number M802 in a lookup table. That table and a complete list of commands is in the documentation of Hamlib. Hamlib is open source software. I don't know why all the comm apps don't use it. Doug KG6U

Hey Jim can you receive other digital modes sucessfully with the same rig and interface hardware?

First time here and I didn't know that VarAC would automatically start the VAR_HF modem. I had started the modem VAR_HF before starting VarAC. Perhaps (just guessing) that if VarAC starts a second instance of the modem, that second modem won't work correctly and won't receive, since the microphone audio is already connected to the first modem. But I have not tried to replicate this behavior.

Hi Gary, here is what I was referring to: It occurs each time I use the slider bar in the upper left of VarAC to change frequency by a single channel, so 5 times to go to Ch15. I assume the message may also pop up if I make a contact on 14.105 and then tell the program to switch to another frequency. I can live with it for now, though I have not yet entered into a QSO with anyone. I don't mind seeing the message once or twice, but perhaps a button can be added to stop repeating itself ("Don't tell me again"). BTW I may be able to provide the control codes for Icom M802 - will let you know if that happens. Actually there are many boat owners with ham radio licenses who have an Icom M802 as the only HF rig on the boat, since it's about the only choice for a legal marine band HF radio at reasonable price. So it would he helpful to add it to the list of rigs for CAT. Thanks, Doug, KG6U

I had exactly the same problem. I knew the rig and soundcard worked fine with FT8 and JS8call. Just installed VARA-HF and VarAC today on Windows11, and had good signals on the waterfall calling frequency. But nothing in the text panes of VarAC. I didn't know which program should be started before the other, or it makes a difference. It wasn't clear from anything I found online. After I closed both programs then ran ONLY VarAC, I found that it runs VARA-HF automatically and then I started getting text in the beacon text area. Doug, KG6U
