Just worked my 1st Polish station with VarAC. DX of any kind here on the west coast is hard to come by for me. The QSO was on 10. I was running 100W to a vertical.
Thanks for the comment. I use an IC-7300, which has no limitation on power (as long as the rig is looking at a good match). I keep an eye on the temperature indicator, and it never gets above the letter "L" in the word COOL.
Well done OM! Welcome to the VarAC world. Here run 25 watts to a fishing rod vertical and I can can wk the beacons in VK and ZL plus some kybd QSOs with DX.
Congratulations! It's all about timing from the West Coast. Gray line is your best time. I just was chatting with a French station that he stated out with a +1 SNR ended up at -19 SNR.
You're right. The grey line usually works well in the evening too. I've had luck working South America, Africa (once) and several European countries. This DX was often made doing FT4/FT8, and occasionally JS8 with JS8CALL. My biggest problem is that I'm retired, and seldom are in the shack before 9 AM PDT, which is past grey line (GRIN).
BTW..if you rig is rated at 100 watts output, recommend you drop power out to about 30 watts to protect your PA !!
