    Decode all modes

    in Feature requests - Archive

VarAC defaults to 500Hz, but when someone runs 2300, can we get it to decode both 500 and 2300?

the VARA-HF modem can be configured on either 2300 or 500. with one exception - if you are on 2300, you can still ask the modem to accept connections in 500Hz (see attached screenshot). but if you try to connect someone else while you are on 2300 and he is on 500, that won't work.

This is not a VarAC limit. Its the modem limit.

Generally speaking - VarAC community rules are to conduct QSOs in 500Hz which is more then enough for chatting. Just to conserve bandwidth and live with all the other stations around us (the Packet 105 network, the Olivia QRG etc.).

Of course one can chose to QSY and conduct QSOs in 2300Hz as an experiment but this is not really a necessity. The VarAC community is only using 500Hz.

ok, I've just seen some wide bw stuff while on 500. Just used to things like FreeDV where you choose a mode, but it will decode all the modes, so you can hear a CQ regardless of mode.

Not sure I follow. Do you want a VARA modem to decode a CQ of other modes (such as PACTOR/AMTOR/OLIVIA ?)

Since we are using VARA... will 2750 be supported?

Sure can be. decided not to. in many countries even 2300 is not allowed. As VarAC is all about chatting, 500HZ provides great performance/BW tradeoff. We all used to be on 2300Hz in the begining and it was hard to find a permanent QRG. Since we moved to 500 we have a "fixed" QRG (still we listen before we TX) and we didn't feel like we missed anything. In most QSO, we very rarely got to the maximum speed that 500Hz offers. I mean like really rarely. So the average QSO does not even utilize the possibilities 500Hz offers.

I'm looking at it from the perspective of the coming file transfer feature... and use on other than hf.
